You and Me Records celebrates its 30th Anniversary on 13 June 2017!
Also releasing on that date are two new Instrumentals; "Going Places!" and "Here We Go Again!" featuring James Adelsberger.
Welcome to You and Me Records
The label was formed in June 1987 by Mike Johnson, Country Music's No.1 Black Yodeler at the same time that he formed his country label, Roughshod Records, and You and Me Music Publishing, for his middle-of-the-road and non-country songs. On board since 2012 is James Adelsberger, our studio engineer, recording artist, co-producer, and co-owner.
In April 1981 Mike did his first professional Nashville recording session at Jim Maxwell's Globe Recording Studio on Dickerson Road. From that session came his first commercial release, a 45-rpm vinyl record under his MAJJ Productions literary banner. Mike wrote lots of stories in grade and high school during the 1950s and '60s.
Around 1982 Mike decided that his music needed to be separated from his literary banner and he formed Pata del Lobo Music Publishing. It would house all of his songs and release another 45-rpm and two cassette albums between June 1986 and June 1987.
When Globe Studio moved to White House Tennessee in 1983, Maxwell sent Mike over to his friend Jim Stanton, owner of Champ Recording Studio and founder of Rich-R-Tone Records and Champ Records. A friendship ensued and Stanton taught him how the business worked. It was during a recording session that Stanton suggested he start his own label. So, not only did Mike form Roughshod Records for his country songs, he took he a step further and formed the You and Me pair for his middle-of-the-road and non-country songs. However, Mike was gaining so much popularity on the independent country circuit that he produced a lot of his You and Me songs on the Roughshod label with a country twist! He in fact moved some of those songs back and forth between the You and Me and Pata del Lobo catalogs, and several times thought of dropping You and Me Music altogether. During his recovery period from a 2003 neck injury he decided to hang fast and began moving non-country songs back to You and Me Music "...where they belonged."
In the spring of 2012 Mike met a gifted young multi-instrumentalist name James Adelsberger at the local Occoquan Coffee House music jam. He hired him to lay tracks for a couple of his songs and in August 2012 signed him to Roughshod Records first as a studio engineer, then as a recording artist. His first release, a 2-song CD single, "Back Home Again" with "The Holy River" received a "New Artist Country Music CD of the Year" nomination from the Rural Roots Music Commission in Anita, Iowa. In November 2014 while they were putting the wraps on their new albums James suggested they do a Christmas release. Exhausted from the album flurry they decided on a 2-song CD Single. James, a drummer for several local Virginia rock bands, is very adept at capturing all types of musical genres, and also composes classical and jazz music, and produces films scores.
On 4 December 2014, "SideKicks Christmas Special" featuring Mike and James became You and Me Records very first release! This, along with James' "Old Time Country Songs Are They Really Dead and Gone?" CD and Mike's "Doggone It I've Written A Sad Song Again" CD, both released on 15 November 2014, were acquired by the Library of Congress' Recorded Sound Reference Center for their permanent music collection on 18 December 2014. The Library began acquiring Mike's music in April 2007 with the acquisition of 114 of his yodeling songs and related music materials.
On 31 August 2015, James' Roughshod Records release, "Old Time Country Songs Are They Really Dead and Gone?" received the "Pure Country CD of the Year" award from the Rural Roots Music Commission at the 40th Old Time Country Music Festival in LeMars, Iowa.
"Country Sounds" a 12-song Instrumental, and the label's 2nd CD was released 26 November 2015 and we intend to exploit James talent and love for all kinds of music to produce many more releases in the future.
Middle-of-the-Road, Gospel, Blues, Rock, Pop, or whatever, we're just gonna mix it up and have a lotta fun. After all, our Motto is "a Little Bit of Something For Everyone!"
